Negociating Collaboration in Theatre Translation

Springing from a variety of experiences in collaborative translation for the stage, including translating a play with one and up to eleven other translators, testing the translation with actors and stage directors on the stage and in front of an audience, working with students at the university, the original authors, other translators and researchers, this seminar explores the methodology of collaboration and the politics of theatre translation. Is it possible, and advisable, to try and find one voice when several translators work together? How does one negociate decision-making when working with students, with artists, and/or with colleagues? To whom does the translation belong when it is the work of many participants in a workshop? Is collaborative translation more effective? Drawing from political sciences, philosophy and aesthetics, we will consider how translating in common and reinventing a time and a space that allow such work is congenial to theatre translation.
Marianne Drugeon is Senior Lecturer at Université de Montpellier Paul-Valéry. She co-translated seven plays, involving two and up to twelve translators. She is currently translating Sabra Falling by Ismail Khalidi, to be published at Les Solitaires Intempestifs. This will be her first experience as the sole translator of a play.
