Translation and language teaching, surprisingly (at first sight) called “strange bedfellows” by Carreres (2006), have a long history together, perhaps as long as the existence of either of them. Indeed, how can one possibly translate if they have not learned a second language? And how can one learn a language other than their mother tongue without translation somehow making its necessity felt, one way or another - whether the process of language learning takes place in an informal setting, or within an educational setting. With respect to the latter, one question which has already made the object of study is that of translation as means and translation as an end in itself (e.g., Carreres 2014). Cook (2010), for instance, sees translation as a valuable aid to language acquisition and evaluation, which also has the benefit of enabling students to relate the language they are learning to their own mother tongue. There is a cultural dimension to this, and translation finds itself in its natural role as go-between and negotiator.

 

In this talk, I discuss the triad in the title and present a conference on this topic which took place between 3-5 April 2025, which I co-organised with Elisa Hatzidaki and Catherine Kirkby (both of them members of ReSO), as well as the volume which should be out in the beginning of 2027.
