Fiona McCann (Université de Lille, CECILLE, ULR 4074) : "The Violence of Care in Contemporary Irish Literature"
This presentation is a work-in-progress which is an extension of recent research into the carceral network in Ireland and the ways in which contemporary literatures have grappled with this question both thematically and formally. I would like to build on that earlier work which focused predominantly on prison writing (by and about prisoners) to now consider how, since the twentieth century, supposed institutions of care in Ireland (industrial schools, Magdalen laundries, prisons, psychiatric hospitals, Direct Provision), in truly Orwellian fashion, have deployed the language of care in order to dissimulate extreme forms of violence, coercion, hyper-surveillance, manipulation, and abuse.
Through the prism of contemporary thinking on “care” (Tronto, Puig de la Bellacasa, Dowling, among others), this paper will analyse some contemporary Irish fiction in which, once one has got past the evident exposure of the violence at the heart of these institutions, one might observe the emergence of a tentative poetics of care.
Biographie : Fiona McCann est née et a grandi à Belfast en Irlande. Elle est professeure de littérature postcoloniale à l'Université de Lille. Ses recherches portent sur les littératures irlandaise et africaines de langue anglaise et sont ancrées dans une approche décoloniale. Elle s'intéresse notamment aux rapports étroits entre capitalisme et colonialisme et la manière dont la littérature esquisse des formes de résistance au Capitalocène par la biais d'une poétique du "care", ainsi qu'aux pédagogies décoloniales. Elle a publié une monographie, un ouvrage collectif et près de 40 articles.
