It is my long-standing dual interest in the Beats and in song lyrics as poetry that provides the material for this talk, largely focussing on Iowan singer-songwriter Greg Brown. Using materiality as my guide, Brown’s lyrics and his being a singer will provide the opportunity to pursue the goals I have set myself:
a) to redirect attention to a moment of American literature that is often considered as not lending itself to a conceptual approach;
b) to promote research on a poetic form whose exponents have received less attention than they deserve, perhaps because they inhabit the gray zone between poésique and muésie.
c) to venture a few hypotheses on the material turn.
