EuroSLA roundtable
Young language learners in an instructed setting: challenges, opportunities and goals
Wednesday, July 3rd 2024 (14h-17h30)

Format of event: The proposed roundtable will be the opening event for the 33rd annual European Second Language Association (EuroSLA) conference (planned from July 3rd to July 6th 2024). The roundtable, planned as a half-day event, would involve five 30-minute talks, addressing the following topic: What can realistically be expected of classroom instruction with young L2 language learners? Challenges and opportunities. Invited roundtable participants have expertise in different, complementary aspects related to this question (Roger Gilabert: use of technology and gamification; Alexandra Vraciu: content and language integrated learning; Raphaël Berthele: individual differences in aptitude) and several will be able to draw on large-scale longitudinal research projects with young L2 language learners in various settings in order to address the question at the center of the event (Elsa Tragant, Carmen Muñoz, Cathy Cohen). In addition, a representative of the French Ministry of Education will participate, providing a perspective informed by both institutional expectations and real-world classroom experience.

Moderator (Brahim Azaoui, Université de Montpellier). The following speakers have confirmed their participation:
Introduction: Stéphanie Cialone (representative of French Ministry of Education, responsible for overseeing English as a Foreign Language instruction in schools in the Languedoc-Roussillon area of France)
Speakers 1 & 2: Elsa Tragant and Carmen Muñoz (University of Barcelona)
Speaker 3:  Cathy Cohen (Université Lyon 1)
